Fuel economy isn’t a priority, either, with 29% of X5 owners agreeing that it is a first consideration when choosing a vehicle (vs. 40%). BMW X5 owners are also less likely to agree that reliability is a first consideration when choosing a new vehicle (52% vs. 60%), or that they’re willing to pay more for a vehicle that is environmentally No leaks. The 3.0L X5 motor has developed excessive oil consumption. No leaks. The actual factory standard is 1 quart of oil consumption for every 1000 miles (sounds crazy but is normal). One last thing I would check is with the engine running remove the oil filler cap on the valve cover, there should be some significant vacuum and the engine less or, none but it's pretty std consumption on E53s, et al. Even your Stlr and/or BMW, will suggest that a qt in 1000-2000 miles. is within "limits". It is what it is with these beasts. I would not be. too concerned; buy a 6 pack at WalMartNation and top up a qt. when needed. BMW engine control uses readings from upstream O2 sensors to achieve optimal engine performance. Upstream O2 sensors can get fouled by excessive fuel or oil consumption. Furthermore, damaged wiring or a loose connector is also possible. Whatever the reason, it will affect the engine performance, and you will get a yellow 1/2 ‘check engine light.

The best years of the BMW X5 are 2020, 2017-2018, 2014-2015, and 2012-2013. The years you should absolutely avoid are 2016, 2005-2006, 2001-2002, and 2008-2010. Most issues are related to expensive repairs and low reliability ratings. Brian Jones. August 30, 2023.
